IDH – The true price of commodities

Client

IDH (the Sustainable Trade Initiative) works with international traders and producers of various commodities. It aims to support sustainable production through its network. The organisation wanted to obtain more information on the social and environmental costs within four of their key agricultural commodity chains.

Project description

The commodity chains that were researched were: cocoa from Ivory Coast, coffee from Vietnam, cotton from India, and tea from Kenya. With the use of our developed True Price scan, we measured and quantified the external social and environmental costs of each commodity. Calculating the living wage gap for workers and the living income gap for farmers was part of this scan too.

Benefits to the client

The Impact Institute provided IDH with a systematic overview of the most material impacts found in the production of these four commodities. Also, we gave recommendations on further improvement of IDH’s investment programs. Overall, these insights support IDH with setting up their investment strategy and facilitating collaboration within their sectors.
